The Myth of the Aphrodisiac

http://www.flickr.com/photos/foxrosser/1525144086/ The idea of an aphrodisiac is very appealing. With just one bite, your libido soars, desire intensifies and sexual experiences become generally more exciting... But are aphrodisiacs just that - an appealing idea? Do they have any basis in scientific fact? Taking their name from the Greek goddess of love and sexuality Aphrodite, these mythical, lust-enhancing substances have supposedly been around for centuries. But no scientific evidence has ever been found that proves a substance can increase libido. Instead, well-known aphrodisiacs work as placebos, or arouse desire through their suggestive shapes - the very phallic rhino horn for example. For those of you on the dating UK scene, here are five supposedly erotic foods to try out and why they have been masquerading as aphrodisiacs for several centuries: Strawberries Even the Romans noted the powerful aphrodisiac effect strawberries can have. This sweet fruit is delicious, leaves a delightful taste in the mouth and is hands-on food, which can be easily shared and seductively eaten. It is much more likely that the fruit has built up its reputation on this basis, rather than because it possesses any magical chemical powers. Oysters The oyster - perhaps the most famous of aphrodisiacs - is erotic mostly because of its suggestive shape. It is also messy, hands-on food, which again makes the experience of eating it much more sensual and suggestive. Casanova supposedly used to eat a large platter of oysters every morning, which no doubt contributed to his success as a womaniser. Apparently, scientists have discovered that zinc, which is necessary for the production of sperm, is high in oysters, so this could contribute to slightly increasing male libido. Ginkgo Biloba This memory-enhancing plant extract is also considered an effective aphrodisiac. Following on the logic that the healthier we are the healthier our reproductive system is, Ginkgo's ability to improve blood circulation certainly has a knock-on effect on libido. Better circulation means more oxygen for the brain and heart. This is why Ginkgo is also recommended for male impotence. Chocolate Although chocolate (again) doesn't directly increase libido, it has an enormous erotic appeal. Its ability to melt is extremely suggestive and has made many companies a lucrative amount with their tubes of chocolate body paint. Also, chocolate contains phenylethylamine and serotonin, which both make you feel good and will logically enhance the pleasure generated from a sexual encounter. Alcohol Alcohol has the effect of an aphrodisiac because it substantially lowers inhibitions. Any underlying desires are likely to be enhanced under the influence of a few drinks, and alcohol can also be a good confidence booster. But this substance also inhibits sexual activity, as too many units can cause erectile dysfunction, which could be a tad embarrassing. It's also difficult to think sensibly after drinking, so using this as an aphrodisiac is a bad idea and could lead to disaster. Whether you find love through online dating, through a friend or at work, aphrodisiacs can be fun to try out with your partner. Just don't be surprised if they have very little effect!
