Everyone dreams. In fact, we all dream several times a night even if most of the time we don't remember what we dreamed about.

There's a whole industry out there that attempts to tell you what your dreams actually mean.

Dreams interpretation is big business.

But do your dreams really mean something? Or are the interpretations of your dreams just another way of siphoning off the contents of your wallet?

Personally, I think there's a lot of value in dreams. Your subconscious can run riot without fear of harming you (give or take the occasional nightmare, but we'll ignore those for the purposes of this article). All sorts of stuff can "bubble up" and your mind can play around with interpreting it whilst you dream. Most of the time without you even remembering you've dreamed about it at all.

Which leads us on to the part of dreams interpretation that's often glossed over: to be able to interpret your dreams, you first have to remember what you dreamed about.

It's easy in the movies - the dream sequence starts and everything is there. It may be in sepia or some other effect to show the movie has gone into a dream sequence, but in a movie a dream is usually pretty clear.

In real life, it's not necessarily as easy.

So you need to start to train yourself to remember more of your dreams. That's more as is "more dreams" and more as in "more detail from your dreams".

Because dreams fade fast, you need to capture them fast.

Keep a dream journal by your bed and use it to write down detail as soon as you wake. If you share a room, it may be a good idea to have a small torch or a focused reading light handy so that your partner's sleep doesn't get too disturbed.

Once you've done this for a few nights, it's time to find out whether dreams interpretation is important to you. Never mind what anyone else says - if you find meaning in your dreams then it's important. If you find after a few nights of scribbling down the memories of your dreams that they're just pure fantasy then it may be best to simply enjoy them at your level. I'm not going to be the one to tell you that your regular dreams of intimate contact with Pamela Anderson or Brad Pitt are good or bad. You be the judge of that!

After a few nights, you'll likely find some common themes in your notes about your dreams.

At this stage, it could pay you to find out what they mean.

Sometimes the meanings of your dreams are easily apparent and you won't need to look up other people's ideas to interpret them. You'll know when this happens as you'll have a "duh" type moment.

Other times, your dreams interpretation can be more difficult. Maybe there are some deep down issues you're facing and your dreams are only hinting at what they are. It's at times like these when some help with the interpretation can be useful. But ultimately only you will know whether the interpretations you get are worthwhile or not.
